Result! Very Happy

Those wheels look spot on.

It's all about the details.

Centre caps were almost as ropey as the wheels and I only got 3 with the car.

A bit of polish and the machine polisher did the job. Put the centre cap into the spare and went over it several times.

A before and after pic below. I've managed to source a NOS polished centre cap which arrived today.

The clock on this car doesn't work.

It's not got a bad screen. it's just dead. You get some numbers when you first plug the cluster in - they soon disappear and it goes blank.

So, I got another one from german Ebay. They're NLA, even the 12 hour version I fitted to th the white car has gone from Tradition.

Also noticed they changed the screen type at some point during production. I thought I could swap screens over but they're a different design and not interchangeable

A couple of pics during disassembly. One of the most nerve wracking jobs on these cars is removing the needle from the tacho without breaking it. Used a fork this time and pulled up - success

Looks like a couple of bad joints on the board. Tried to reflow with new solder but no luck. Modern solder is officially crap.

Really not sure currently.

It's a really good car with relatively low miles and full history. Problem for me is using it. Got 2 other cars taking up my time although the A5 has been pretty good.

There's a few items want to sort on it which will take a few months

Mike you'll always have that issue, if you ever sell one you will only buy another!

you know me all too well.

Really need to stop buying projects. This one kind of fell into my lap and I'd already agreed to take it on before the Ur went.

It's been a while. Lost my mojo a bit after the MOT pass. Had flu at the start of April which knocked me back for most of that month.

Anyway, back to the car.

Before getting it MOT'd I'd purchased new ball joints. They were a bit loose, although not knocking I actually thought they would fail.

They didn't but it was time to replace them.

TRW boxes but they come with Audi numbers on them. These are the cast wishbones on this car being a 93 so matching ball joints.

Had a slight problem once the wishbone was off the car. This happened on both sides and it was always the middle

One sheared stud. First time I've ever broken something when using impact

No idea who put them on- must have been Geoff Capes

The good news is they just push out using the vice.

Bad news is they're NLA 893 407 745 A.

They're wheel studs but M10 are all M10x1.25 whereas this requires a 1.5 thread. I fouund one on Ebay but it didn't fit as the spline diameter was too big.

A rear ball joint lock plate I had lying around yielded 2 studs. I used the vice to push in. They are solid and not coming out easily.

I used a hex die nut to clean all the threads. Worth every penny as you can't use a die handle here.

New ball joint fitted - you can see the score marks I made before removing the old one.

The new ball joint comes with a new pinch bolt.

Just throw it away as it's not only too short but the shank isn't long enough. This means when it is in place, the threads will wear against the ball joint groove.

I think you should keep this one Mike.

I dont think a potential buyer would fully appreciate the work youre putting into it.

It's a good car. I've nearly done 1500 miles in it since March.

Just slowly working through the issues. New tank sender now in so I know how much fuel I have got left.

Got the rear bumper repaired and the bonnet re-sprayed as well.

Got a new leather gearknob. Top tip on this. The 5 and 6 speed leather versions are not available but the 4 speed is. Buy a 4 speed leather gearknob and prise out the logo and swap over. Job Done.

I've sourced a set of Avus alloys for using in winter. Don't want the diamond cut wheels getting damaged by the salt up here
